INACH Member's Webinar - Dokustelle: The Rise of Anti-Muslim Racism, An Austrian and European Perspective

INACH Member's Webinar - Dokustelle: The Rise of Anti-Muslim Racism, An Austrian and European Perspective

Date and time: 8th of April from 14.00 to 15.00 CET

In this session, Dokustelle will provide an in-depth analysis of the rise of anti-Muslim racism, drawing from their work at an organization that documents and analyzes cases of anti-Muslim discrimination in Austria. They will present the latest data on reported incidents, highlighting trends and patterns that reveal how Muslim communities are increasingly targeted — from verbal abuse and online hate to institutional discrimination and racial profiling by law enforcement.

The session will also explore the various terms used to describe these phenomena — such as Islamophobiaanti-Muslim racism, and Muslim hatred — and discuss why framing this form of discrimination as racism is crucial for understanding its structural and systemic nature. To place Austria’s situation in a broader context, Dokustelle will offer a comparative overview using findings from the EU Fundamental Rights Agency’s study Being Muslim in the EU, examining how anti-Muslim racism manifests across Europe and the similarities and differences between national contexts. Additionally, the session will touch on the intersectionality of anti-Muslim racism, emphasizing how gender, migration status, and political discourse further shape the experiences of Muslim individuals, particularly Muslim women and refugees. The session aims to shed light on the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to combat anti-Muslim racism — not only through documentation and legal action but also by challenging public narratives and ensuring accountability within institutions.

There will be time for Q&A at the end, encouraging an open dialogue on how we can push for stronger, collective responses at both national and European levels.
